New website and Open Source Project!

August 31, 2008 – 1:47 am

Hey I am working on a new website called Phoky. What is Phoky? Well it’s a photo image hosting website without all the fluff (at least for now :) ). The website should go live sometime this weekend and the great thing about this project is that I will be open sourcing it on github. The project and site will be released under NerdRocket which is my development/consulting company.

The project is being developed on Ruby on Rails 2.1.0 and because of Ruby on Rails I have been able to develop it so quickly.

Right now I am pulling an all nighter wrapping up the design of the project. I will not sleep till it is released :) . I plan on running some local tests; soon after that I will be uploading it to the Phoky website. Some time next week I will upload the project to github so anyone can grab a copy.

This will be one of the many projects to be released under the NerdRocket name.

Well got to get back to the project but if you got any questions post away!

Firefox 3 really is faster!

March 13, 2008 – 10:33 am

So I went ahead and downloaded the latest beta of Firefox 3 (beta 4). I am inNew Firefox 3 look total shock on how fast it is. It’s waaaaay faster then Firefox 2 on my Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard install. If this beta is just a preview of what is to come from Mozilla and Firefox then I wouldn’t doubt that Firefox might be my default browser again.I switched over to Safari once Apple released Safari 3 beta.

I have been a Safari user since then, but with the latest beta of Firefox 3 … it’s a real close match.

Firefox 3 beta 4 is also supporting a whole new look on OS X … and i like it! The unfortunate thing is most of the plugins I use are not Firefox 3 ready (yet).

All these status updating sites not one that is “perfect”

March 3, 2008 – 2:07 am

I am completely disappointed by the status sites or social messaging sites. This is really a rant more then anything. Being this is tech based stuff I am sure you wouldn’t mind ;) .

I am sick of Twitter on how it has its hick ups, of course no service is perfect and nothing will be but twitters ups and downs are bit to much for me personally and well I am dropping them like a brick. I stopped using twitter back in November and switched over to Jaiku but that is another story. Last week I got back on Twitter in hopes that it would be a refresh for me and liven up my social aspect of the online life i have.

It didn’t … I found myself as annoyed as I was before so yes I am dropping it. Maybe in another 3 months I will go back on there and see if it has changed, but I don’t think it will be.

I really think Twitter is great it’s just they need to get a little more stable and I know that’s tough with so many users accessing the site so frequent.

Jaiku is a great service and it’s now owned by Google but Jaiku needs a lot of TLC. They could go places if they added more of a mobile feel to the service and added a few more features. The thing that attracted me to Jaiku was the community feel of the site. Jaiku has channels built in to the service so you can discuss things easily within the channels and keep track of it. This is something twitter is missing and needs it badly! Pownce has something like it but not exactly.

I am leaving Jaiku from a personal level where I will not be posting my day to day stuff but more of using it as a community resource when I need a question answered or I am looking for something. Jaiku will be perfect for it.

That leaves me with Pownce … I really like Pownce it has file sharing, link sharing, event sharing, and good ol’ messaging. It allows your posts to be public, private, to a group of friends, or a certain person you are friends with. Pownce is more community like then Twitter but less then Jaiku, so I can live with that. It’s mobile website works on my phone and on my Amazon Kindle, which is a major plus for me. It is missing one thing, actually it’s missing two things I would love that they had … a SMS code and a Windows Mobile application of course with a windows mobile application they can extend the delay of a SMS code but both would be ideal for mobile use. I mean not everyone has an iPhone(yet!) ;) . Oh it’s also the only service that I know in this area that has a paid plan. The paid plan removes ads, higher uploading limit, and you can customize your profile. I am debating if i should or should not go pro.

So there you have it my random rant about status/social messaging sites well at least the top three in my book. I am sticking with Pownce and hopefully it will do.

If you’re on Pownce and want to be my friend :) here is my profile http://pownce.com/DigitalKNK/. I will be a regular on there trust me ;) .

Leopard is SuperDuper!

February 5, 2008 – 12:23 pm

SuperDuper now runs on Leopard!

So SuperDuper! has been updated to support Leopard, this is awesome news. I haven’t been able to backup my system since I upgraded to Leopard because SuperDuper! wasn’t Leopard compatible. Well I know it’s not a valid excuse because I could have used the free CarbonCopyCloner or TimeMachine but it wouldn’t be the same since SuperDuper! does incremental updates to the backup target, where CarbonCopyCloner only does full backups.

So this again is great news I can now run TimeMachine along side with SuperDuper! to have myself an almost perfect back up solution … next up a remote backup solution … what to pick? Any suggestions?

I got my Amazon Kindle! … nevermind

January 27, 2008 – 12:43 am

Kindle brokeSo I received my Amazon Kindle on the 22nd of January and I have enjoyed it since. But I have come to find out that I have received a defected Kindle. This seems to be a rare but known problem I am having with the kindle. My kindle will not hold it’s charge more then 24 hours even with the wireless off and it turned off while I am sleeping. It really is frustrating. I been working on writing up a review on it like the rest of the Kindle owners but it’s kinda hard when I am using it and it kinda just poops out on me.Close pic of the error

I spoke to an Amazon.com Customer Representative today which I have to say was the easiest support call I have had since god who knows when. I went to the Amazon website clicked on Contact Us click on the button to have them call me within seconds I was on the phone with someone which was prepared to help me as soon as I picked up the phone …. AMAZing! Well by the end of the conversation I had with the rep on the phone they decided to put my inquiry on expedite status because they did see that my Kindle was having issues they weren’t sure what the problem was BUT they would send out a brand new kindle out.So I am currently the Kindle Ordered and will do my work with it as much as I can till I receive the new one, but I have to say Amazon has done a great job with the Kindle and their customer support.

UPDATE: Never got an email about my new Kindle but checked out the Amazon Kindle site by accident and well there is shows You purchased this item on January 28, 2008. There you go already have my order processed but they are giving me a shipping estimation of February 27th which is a month away. Now I don’t mind using this Kindle that I have now till then but my Techie side is saying I want it now! I am happy they have been able to process it so quickly. Once again Amazon proves they truly care about their customers.
